Anil Kumble discovers a special talent in his spin hunt - Shankar

In his hunt for Anil Kumble’s spin stars cricket trials across 80 towns and cities for past two months, the former India captain came across an unusual leg-spinner in Bangalore. After nearly watching more than 2000 spinners across Karnataka,110 finalists were picked and asked to demonstrate their skills at NRA ground in Bangalore. But one boy stood out.
A 17-year-old Shankar Sajjan, a leg spinner, was physically challenged with deformed hands. Shankar caught everyone’s eye in particular Kumble who was left amazed.
“I was really amazed at his spirit. We will be having him in our camp as a special case. This reflects true India. Underlying talent in every walk of life. All one needs is an opportunity. I am glad I could provide one,” Kumble said.
Like many young boys in India, Shankar too was passionate about cricket. But things obviously weren't easy for him. Around 3 years ago, he had gone to a Cricket Club but it was hard for him to convince the local coaches. His coaches made it clear that he will be only accepted if he bowls properly. Despite his deformity, he cleared his selection. On merit. And since then he has been at chipping away at his dream – spinning that cricket ball.
When a local newspaper carried the notice about the spin trials Shankar couldn't stop himself to travel in Banglore. “I’m big fan of Kumble sir and it’s a dream come true. He told me that he will be sponsoring my training and education needs,” Shankar says.
It will be too early to say what lies ahead for Shankar but for time being a special bowler has been spotted by a special bowler himself.
